The Two Major Standards
The armored vehicle industry primarily uses two certification standards: NIJ (National Institute of Justice) from the United States and VPAM (Vereinigung der Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen) from Europe.
NIJ Standards Explained
The NIJ standard is the most widely used in the Americas. Here is what each level means:
NIJ Level IIIA - This is the most common level for civilian armored vehicles. It protects against virtually all handgun threats including 9mm, .357 Magnum, and .44 Magnum. The armoring is relatively lightweight, allowing the vehicle to maintain near-stock performance and appearance.
NIJ Level III - A significant step up, this level protects against 7.62x39mm rifle rounds, such as those fired from an AK-47. The armoring requires steel or composite panels and adds noticeable weight to the vehicle.
NIJ Level IV - The highest NIJ rating, this level stops armor-piercing .30 caliber rifle rounds. It requires ceramic or specialized composite materials and substantially increases vehicle weight.
VPAM Standards Explained
The European VPAM standard offers more granular levels:
- VR4-VR6: Roughly equivalent to NIJ IIIA (handgun protection)
- VR7: Equivalent to NIJ III (rifle protection)
- VR9-VR10: Equivalent to NIJ IV (armor-piercing protection)
Choosing the Right Level
The appropriate protection level depends on your specific threat environment:
For most executive protection and family security applications in urban environments, NIJ Level IIIA provides excellent protection while maintaining vehicle discretion and performance.
For operations in higher-threat environments or regions with prevalent rifle threats, NIJ Level III or VPAM VR7 may be appropriate.
Level IV protection is typically reserved for military, diplomatic, or extreme high-risk applications.
Weight and Performance Considerations
Higher protection levels mean more weight. A Level IIIA sedan might add 200-400 kg, while a Level IV SUV could add 1,500 kg or more. This affects acceleration, braking, fuel economy, and handling. Quality armoring companies upgrade suspension and brakes accordingly.
Glass Considerations
Ballistic glass thickness increases with protection level. Level IIIA glass is typically 21-25mm thick, while Level IV glass can exceed 70mm. Thicker glass affects visibility and window operation.
