Ballistic Glass
Our ballistic glass provides comprehensive protection while maintaining clarity and visibility. Multiple layers of glass and polycarbonate absorb and distribute impact energy.
Key Features
Ballistic glass is one of the most critical components in any armored vehicle, protecting occupants while maintaining essential visibility for safe driving. Unlike steel panels hidden within door cavities, ballistic glass is constantly visible and must meet exacting standards for both protection and optical quality.
How Ballistic Glass Works
Ballistic glass is engineered through precise lamination of multiple layers including float glass, polycarbonate, and specialized interlayers such as polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and polyurethane. When a projectile strikes the outer glass layer, the energy is distributed across the laminate structure. The outer glass layers crack and absorb initial energy, while inner polycarbonate layers catch fragments and prevent penetration into the vehicle cabin.
Construction Layers
A typical ballistic glass panel consists of:
- Outer glass layer: Hardened float glass that initiates bullet deformation
- Intermediate glass layers: Additional glass plies that absorb energy progressively
- PVB interlayers: Flexible bonding material that holds broken glass together
- Polycarbonate layer: Inner plastic layer that catches spall and prevents penetration
- Anti-spall coating: Final inner layer that prevents glass fragments from entering the cabin
Thickness by Protection Level
Glass thickness varies significantly based on protection requirements:
- Level 3 (NIJ IIIA): 21-25mm thickness for handgun protection
- Level 4 (NIJ III): 30-35mm for submachine gun threats
- Level 5 (NIJ III+): 40-50mm for assault rifle protection
- Level 6 (NIJ IV): 55-70mm for armor-piercing rounds
- Level 7 (Military): 80-100mm for anti-material weapons
Optical Quality
Despite increased thickness, our ballistic glass maintains exceptional optical clarity with 85%+ light transmission. We carefully match glass curvature to original specifications, ensuring drivers have undistorted vision. Every window is inspected for optical defects, bubbles, or delamination before installation.
Window Operation
For lower protection levels (3-4), power windows can typically operate normally with upgraded motors to handle the additional glass weight. At higher levels, the extreme glass thickness may require fixed windows with emergency escape systems. We engineer each installation to maximize functionality while maintaining protection.
