Ballistic Steel
High-hardness ballistic steel forms the primary protection layer in body panels. Our steel is precisely cut and formed to integrate seamlessly with vehicle structures.
Key Features
Ballistic steel is the foundation of vehicle armoring, providing the primary barrier against ballistic threats. Unlike standard automotive steel, ballistic steel is specially formulated and heat-treated to achieve exceptional hardness that defeats projectiles through resistance rather than absorption.
Understanding Ballistic Steel
Ballistic steel differs fundamentally from standard steel in its composition and treatment. Through precise alloying and heat treatment processes, ballistic steel achieves hardness levels measured on the Brinell scale (HB) that far exceed conventional steels. This hardness is critical—when a projectile strikes, the steel's hardness causes the bullet to deform, fragment, or shatter rather than penetrate.
Steel Grades and Hardness
We utilize multiple grades of ballistic steel matched to protection requirements:
- Standard ballistic steel (450-500 HB): Entry-level protection for handgun threats
- High-hardness steel (500-550 HB): Mid-level protection against rifle threats
- Ultra-high-hardness steel (550-600+ HB): Maximum protection against armor-piercing ammunition
Higher hardness provides better protection but requires more sophisticated cutting and forming techniques. Our engineering team selects the optimal grade for each application.
Precision Cutting and Forming
Every steel panel is cut using CNC laser technology that maintains exact tolerances while preserving the steel's ballistic properties. Heat-affected zones from cutting are minimized to prevent degradation of hardness at panel edges. Complex curves and shapes are formed using specialized hydraulic presses calibrated for ballistic steel's unique properties.
Installation Locations
Ballistic steel is installed throughout the vehicle:
- Door panels: Multiple overlapping panels fill door cavities
- Pillar posts: A, B, and C pillars receive steel inserts
- Roof: Full coverage or strategic reinforcement based on threat level
- Firewall: Protection between engine and cabin
- Rear quarter panels: Coverage of trunk and cargo areas
- Floor: Plates protecting against underbody attacks
Welding Techniques
Joining ballistic steel panels requires certified ballistic welding techniques. Standard welding can create heat-affected zones where hardness is reduced, potentially creating vulnerabilities. Our welders are trained in specialized techniques that maintain protection across all joints and seams. Every weld is inspected to verify ballistic integrity.
Overlap Engineering
Critical to armoring effectiveness is the overlap between adjacent panels. We engineer 50-100mm overlaps at all panel junctions to eliminate any gaps in protection. Door-to-pillar transitions, roof-to-pillar joints, and all seams receive careful attention to ensure continuous coverage with no weak points.
